Math-Maastricht

The city of Maastricht has many great things to offer. From the familiar sight of the red Sint Jans church tower looming over the city, to the iconic Sint Servaas bridge over the river Maas, to… mathematics research.

Math/Maastricht joins these different worlds. The project explores a simple question: which location in the city reminds UM’s math-minded researchers of their work? The answers are diverse and often inspiring. The labyrinth in the Saint Servatius Basilica, Fort Saint Pieter, the tower mill near Gronsveld... But why? Math/Maastricht followed twelve researchers to their chosen locations and documented their answers. The resulting stories and photographs show off both the city and the diverse range of mathematics-based research at Maastricht University.

The exhibition at Minderbroedersberg showcases a number of highlights of the project, which was photographed by Joey Roberts. The exhibition also features unique behind-the-scenes material not to be found anywhere else, and the Math/Maastricht story bundle can be obtained for free at the exhibition space (subject to availability). Alternatively, the stories may be viewed online.

Also on display: a custom-made, math-inspired 3D object installed by artist Jules Sinsel. Jules: “My goal is to work from multiple perspectives by exploring and designing. It’s something that instils curiosity in people and appeals to them. For this, I use patterns, order and symmetry, which can be repeated in shape and colour. These aspects also constantly echo in science and nature. Is that why it attracts us?”
