The exhibition ‘The Beauty of Botanical Drawing by Esmée Winkel’ runs parallel to the exhibition ‘Kruidenrijk’ with lavishly illustrated herbals from Maastricht collections. Winkel shows how scientific illustrations and botanical paintings still play an important role in the publications and theses of researchers. There is no better way to capture the essence of a living plant or animal then by drawing or painting. Only with an illustration a reconstruction of a damaged plant or dried herbarium material is possible for example. In Botanical Art a wondrous world of plants will be revealed to the observer. Winkel works as a scientific illustrator and botanical artist for Naturalis Biodiversity Center. She received her BSc degree Biology at the Leiden University and her Master Scientific Illustration at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design and Maastricht University. Her work has been a recipient of many awards and is held in various public and private collections around the world. Recently she has been presented with the American Society of Botanical Artists) Botanical Illustrator Award for Excellence in Scientific Botanical Art.
