Debeyeplein 1

Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences In 1980, this remarkable redbrick building at Debeyeplein was the first expansion of Maastricht University on the east bank of the Maas River; at that time the building was still surrounded by meadows. Built between1980-1982, it was designed by the architects firm Swinkels-Salemans (today named AadM, Architecten aan de Maas). Its basic concept was modeled on the campus at Oxford and Cambridge: a main street with several cross streets aligned with various buildings, freestanding or in a row, with entrances near the intersections, to foster the emergence of squares. The buildings are interconnected, thus providing room for a combination of functions and services, such as student dining hall, lecture halls, study halls and the library. At first this building housed the medical library, an information centre, the department of family medicine, a dining hall, meeting facilities and offices. Today, after several architectural modifications, the building is used by the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.
