When in 2010 it became clear that the Randwyck campus building by architect Santiago Calatrava was not going to be completed, due to budgetary problems, Maastricht University ran into the problem of a lack of space. This problem was resolved by renting the former building of local newspaper De Limburger. It is impossible to miss the building when driving across the Kennedy bridge: it is black and has dark-colored window panes, which is why it is popularly nicknamed the ‘coffin’ or ‘black box’. Yet the building’s color is rather more like ink blue instead of black, a reference to the ink used to print newspapers. In 1988 the building, a design by Swinkels/Paschier (today named Architecten aan de Maas), was regarded as ‘ultramodern’. Still, after only a few years the newspaper moved to another office. Briefly, there was the idea to use the building for indoor carting races. In November 2010, however, the university decided to move in, after the building – with some 5.460 m2 of office space and 152 parking spaces – had been partly remodeled.
