‘Painting No.1826’ is a work by artist Jan van der Ploeg (1959), which he originally made for the “De Meest Eigentijdse Schilderijen” exhibition at the Dordrechts Museum.

Van der Ploeg, an Amsterdam-based artist, combines strong colors with shapes in different dimensions while he responds to the architecture of buildings and public spaces. His work resonates with the tradition initiated by Piet Mondriaan and De Stijl, but also the “color in shape” approach of Elsworth Kelly. The artist’s paintings and murals are known worldwide, and exhibited for example in the Boijmans van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Sarah Cottier Gallery in Sydney.

‘Painting No.1826’ came to FASoS through Van der Ploeg’s connection with Christian Ernsten, an Assistant Professor at this faculty. In 2015, the artist and Ernsten collaborated on an land art project in the Groningen province. In fact, as part of an artist-in-residency period at the Atelier aan de Middendijk, Van der Ploeg responded to the land art work, “Cancelled Crop” by American artist Dennis Oppenheim.

The impressive ‘Painting No.1826’ accentuates the 25 years anniversary of FASoS.
