Maastricht University acquires a new work of art
in the building at Tongersestraat 6-8
The Art and Heritage Commission of Maastricht University commissioned two recently graduated artists/designers (studio WM) to create a light object for the staircase of the Commandant’s House at Tongersestraat 6-8.
The artwork consists of a kind of window, which comes with forty-two flower shapes, each of which consists of six LEDs.The light object responds to changes in the sky outside by showing different light effects that in fact simulate the cloud movements above. Whenever clouds move in above the building, this becomes visible through the flowers’ switching on and off in organic patterns.
Dutch Light, which is the title of this artwork, refers to the natural light celebrated by many 17th-century Dutch landscape painters – a light that still today many art lovers experience as unique.
