A gift to the city of Maastricht and its citizens.
On Friday, September 2, before the start of the week in which the university is celebrating its fortieth anniversary, the Dr. Sjeng Tans Monument, will be donated officially. The monument, an art work of the artist Caius Spronken, is located at the Tongersestraat 53 in Maastricht.
Maastricht and Limburg are proud of their university. The economic and social significance of the university, the academic hospital and related institutions is very large for the city and the region. Dr. J.G.H. (Sjeng) Tans has played a decisive role in preparing the establishment of the university in its early development years. He was also the first chairman of the Executive Board of Maastricht University.
The university is fused with the streetlife in Maastricht and Dr. Sjeng Tans in Maastricht therefore deserves also a permanent and dignified place that reminds us of its importance for Maastricht and the region. For that reason, the Committee Dr. J. Tans in 2016 started a campaign to erect a monument to Tans, where it all began, in the heart of the city, Tongersestraat 53. The monument is a gift to the city of Maastricht and its citizens.
The support from the City of Maastricht, the Province of Limburg, the Academic Hospital Maastricht, Maastricht University, the University Fund Limburg / SWOL, the foundation and the foundation Elisabeth Strouven Canon Salden / Nieuwenhof made this initiative possible.
